Time magazine opted for Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke as its Person of the Year, instead of putting Barack Obama on its cover today.

The magazine said of Ben Bernanke: “He didn’t just reshape U.S. monetary policy. He led an effort to save the world economy”.

Naming him as its person of the year, Time magazine risks of going against a tradition at the magazine, but this selection is probably going to be universally hailed as a reasonable choice for three reasons: Bernanke has been always  a lightning rod of controversy, he had to shape the U.S. economy or financial policy this being the most crucial job in the world and he and what he is doing was the most important news item in the country in 2009.

Richard Stengel, the Time magazine’s managing editor, is doing his job, even if it makes people angry.

Ben Bernanke has also the support of Banking Committee Chairman Chris Dodd (D-CT).
